Give the new account a trial job first. Move salary and recurring payments only after you have tested the functions you actually depend on.
Before the trial: map your monthly commitments
Use recent statements to list salary, rent, loan instalments, insurance/takaful, utilities, subscriptions, family transfers and cash withdrawals. Note the due date and payment method beside each. A direct debit, a saved payee and a recurring card charge need different changes.
| Item | Check before moving it | Evidence it works |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | Ask payroll which account details and cutoff date it needs. | The first salary arrives in the intended account. |
| Rent and transfers | Verify recipient, transfer limits, scheduling and any cooling-off period. | A small test transfer is received; the real payment is separately confirmed. |
| Direct debits | Ask each biller whether and how to change the mandate. | The biller confirms the change and the next collection succeeds. |
| Card subscriptions | Update the merchant’s stored card details where needed. | The next charge uses the new card without duplicating payment. |
| Cash and travel | Check the ATM network, withdrawal fees, limits and overseas controls. | A suitable access route is available for when you need it. |
Run a small, defined trial
- Transfer an amount you can temporarily do without. For example, you could use RM200 if that fits your budget.
- Make a small outgoing transfer and check both account histories. Confirm the displayed recipient before authorising.
- Try a normal bill or purchase only if supported. Save receipts and review the next statement.
- Save the bank’s phone number outside the app and read its lost-device recovery instructions.
- Compare the actual experience with the problem you wanted to solve. Stop here if it adds more work than value.

Change one payment cycle at a time
Keep enough in the old account for payments still scheduled there. Do not cancel the old arrangement until the replacement is confirmed, and check for duplicate instructions.
Illustration: rent of RM1,200 and a RM180 utility payment are due before your employer’s account-change cutoff. Keep that RM1,380 available in the account that will pay them. Moving salary instructions today does not prove this month’s pay will follow them.
Plan for a phone problem
A backup is only useful if you can reach it during the same outage. GXBank, for example, documents a 12-hour outgoing-transaction restriction after rebinding a device. Check your bank’s waiting period before changing phones.
Keep or close the old account?
After confirming salary and recurring payments across a complete cycle, review outstanding card holds, expected refunds, statements and account-closure charges. Keeping an account for cash or branch needs may be worthwhile; keeping many unused accounts can create monitoring work or dormancy charges. Follow the bank’s formal closure process if you decide to close it.
