Five things to check behind a bank promotion

The rate is only the beginning. Conditions decide what you actually get.

Work out what you can earn with money and purchases you already planned. A headline rate is not the same as your reward in ringgit.

Use this five-question check

  1. Who qualifies? Read what “new customer” means and whether registration or a referral code is compulsory.
  2. What must you commit? Note the deposit, tenure, salary credit or eligible spending, and whether funds must come from another bank.
  3. Where does the reward stop? Check the balance cap, cashback cap and campaign-wide quota.
  4. When is it paid? Separate qualifying dates from payout dates and any account-open requirement.
  5. What if plans change? Check early withdrawals, refunded purchases, missed targets and the ordinary rate afterwards.

Work through GXBank’s six-month Bonus Pocket

The reviewed offer quotes 3.80% p.a. total, including the 2.00% base rate, for six months. The minimum to earn bonus is RM500 and the maximum is RM12,500 per pocket, up to four pockets. Early withdrawal forfeits the bonus; base interest is retained. Confirm the available rate when creating a Pocket.

Illustrative saver A: RM5,000 genuinely available for six months. A simple estimate is RM5,000 × 3.80% × 6/12 = RM95 total. Compared with an unchanged 2.00% base rate, the extra is about RM45. Actual days and daily credits affect payout.

Illustrative saver B: the same RM5,000 is needed for school expenses in two months. The six-month headline is a poor basis for the decision because withdrawing early loses the bonus. Accessible savings may fit that need better.

Cashback: calculate in RM first

A hypothetical 5% cashback offer capped at RM10 stops adding reward after RM200 of qualifying spending. If you already planned RM200 of eligible groceries, the potential benefit is RM10. If it prompts RM100 of extra purchases, the reward does not cancel that extra cost.

A short decision note prevents surprises

Before joining, write: “I qualify because __. I will commit RM__ for __. My expected reward is RM__. It should arrive by __. If I withdraw or miss a condition, __.” If you cannot fill a blank from the official terms, resolve it before committing money.

Keep the terms and registration acknowledgement you relied on. Check the bank’s displayed campaign/rate before confirming; a listed closing date does not prove remaining quota. Read the GX offer summary and source links or compare other commitments.
